When Balance In The Sky Teaches Us How To See Clearly On Earth
A Moment of Balance
For the past six months, the Northern Hemisphere has been leaning away from the Sun, receiving weaker, angled light. On March 20 each year, something remarkable happens above us.
For a brief moment, the Earth reaches a precise position in its orbit. Neither hemisphere tilts toward or away from the Sun. The Sun sits exactly above the equator, and the line dividing day from night passes cleanly through both poles simultaneously.
Day and night become nearly equal across the planet.
This moment is known as the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere — the first day of Astronomical Spring.
In 2026, it arrives on March 20 at 7:46 AM Pacific Time.
From that moment forward, the days will gradually grow longer until the summer solstice in June.
The equinox is more than a calendar marker.
It is one of the few moments each year when the architecture of the Earth-Sun relationship reveals itself precisely.
On this day, and only on this day, the Sun rises almost exactly due east and sets due west anywhere on Earth.
For a brief window of time, the geometry of our solar system becomes visible in a way that anyone standing outside can observe.
When Humans Learned to Read the Sky
Ancient civilizations understood the significance of this moment long before modern astronomy explained it. Across continents and across millennia, people built monuments aligned to the equinox Sun.
At Stonehenge in England, constructed more than 5,000 years ago by people with no metal tools – and, it bears mentioning, no project management software – the rising equinox Sun aligns through the ancient stones toward the central altar.
At Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the ancient Maya engineered something even more extraordinary.
On the afternoons of the equinox, sunlight strikes the pyramid known as El Castillo at a precise angle. Seven triangular shadows appear along the staircase, connecting with a carved serpent head at the base of the structure.
The result is the illusion of a serpent descending the pyramid — a symbolic representation of Kukulkan, the feathered serpent deity in Maya tradition.
For most of the year, the pyramid is simply a massive stepped monument.
But twice each year — when the Sun reaches the precise angle of the equinox — the hidden design reveals itself.
The architecture is always there.
The pattern becomes visible only when the light is right.
The Discipline of Discernment
Discernment works much the same way.
Truth is rarely hidden.
It is simply not visible until perspective, timing, and attention come into alignment.
We live in a time filled with opinions, headlines, and confident voices insisting they already know what is true. Information moves faster than reflection, and emotional reactions often spread more quickly than careful thought.
In an environment like that, discernment becomes essential.
Discernment requires humility.
It asks us to pause before believing…to listen before judging…and to look carefully beyond the stories that surround us.
When confusion spreads, and emotions run high, discernment steadies the mind and anchors the heart in what is real.
It reminds us that not everything we hear is truth. And not everything that appears certain truly is.
Discernment requires the courage to admit when we do not know. It asks us to keep seeking understanding rather than defending assumptions.
Curiosity becomes more valuable than pride. Wisdom rises above the need to always be right.
Most importantly, discernment protects us from being pulled into fear, division, and manipulation. It allows us to see through illusion without becoming cynical, and to remain thoughtful even as the world around us becomes reactive.
When the World Begins Again
The Spring Equinox also signals something unfolding steadily across the natural world.
As daylight begins to exceed darkness in the Northern Hemisphere, biological signals activate throughout living systems across the planet
Trees begin to bud as soil temperatures warm.
Migratory birds begin their journeys northward, guided by their internal sensitivity to the lengthening of the day — a built-in compass that somehow never needs updating and remains unbothered by conflicting opinions about whether it is actually spring yet
Bees emerge from winter clusters
Frogs return to warming ponds
Across forests, fields, rivers, and coastlines, the lengthening of daylight signals that a new cycle has begun
Spring does not arrive because someone announces it. It arrives because the underlying conditions have shifted.
When Awareness Deepens
Something similar often unfolds within us.
At certain moments in life, awareness deepens
Old assumptions loosen
New ways of seeing begin to take shape
And as the world continues revealing itself, the real question becomes how honestly we are willing to meet what we see.
The Spring Equinox reminds us that balance is not static. It is a living process of adjustment.
Discernment works the same way.
It is not a single realization or a final conclusion.
It is an ongoing discipline of attention — refining how we think, how we listen, and how we respond to the world around us.
Our thoughts become more deliberate
Our words more measured
Our actions more aligned with integrity
Gradually, the noise that once felt overwhelming loses some of its power. Because we begin to recognize something important.
Clarity does not come from reacting faster. It comes from seeing more clearly.
When the Light Is Right
Eight billion people now share this small planet as it turns through space.
Today, for a brief moment, the light and the dark are held in almost perfect balance. Wherever you are, the Sun will rise close to due east and set close to due west.
The geometry of the world reveals itself overhead.
And with it comes a simple reminder: When the light is right, patterns become visible.
The real question is whether we are paying attention to what they reveal.
