Field Notes from a Deeply Participating Skeptic On Mercury’s Gifts

First, A Confession

Let me be honest with you upfront.

I have fully disengaged from any belief in Mercury retrograde as a governing force in my life. It has always struck me as a remarkably efficient way to outsource decision-making to a planet.

And yet here I am. Paying close attention.

Because somewhere between my fourth corrupted Word document in a single week and the moment my Excel spreadsheet simply decided it was done participating, something shifted. I am what you might call a deeply participating skeptic. I roll my eyes.

I also keep records like a forensic analyst.

And this one? This one was worth noting.

The Astronomy, For the Skeptics in the Room

For those who require the astronomy before granting this five more minutes of attention — fair. Here it is.

Mercury retrograde is not a mystical force. It is an optical phenomenon. Three to four times a year, Mercury's orbit brings it between Earth and the Sun in a way that makes it appear to move backward across the sky. It does not actually reverse. It just looks that way from our vantage point.

Ancient astronomers tracked it with precision. Medieval merchants planned around it. Sailors, scholars, and scribes all had opinions about what it meant when the planet governing communication, commerce, and cognition appeared to reverse course.

Whether you believe any of that matters is secondary. What matters is this: the pattern gets people's attention. And this particular retrograde earned it.

Why This One Was Different

This cycle moved through Pisces — the last sign of the zodiac, the sign of dissolution, depth, and everything that resists being scheduled. It did not move through Virgo, where Mercury is precise and organized and color-codes its calendar. It moved through water. Through fog. Through the part of the sky that dissolves rather than defines.

And then — because the cosmos appears to have a preference for escalation — it occurred concurrent with an eclipse corridor, arrived on the heels of the Fire Horse Year beginning February 17th, which has its own opinions about dismantling things, and has been doing exactly that since late January.

Mercury — representing the mind — moved into water and performed exactly as expected under those conditions. A flood followed.

That’s not my metaphor. That’s the geometry.

The Evidence

The result, for a remarkable number of competent, intelligent, technologically capable people, looked something like this:

Computers that functioned perfectly well in January suddenly required three restarts to open a single document. Word revolted against its users. Excel began making independent executive decisions. Files vanished. Emails sent themselves at the wrong moment or failed to send at all. Calendars glitched. Video calls dropped at precisely the wrong second. Devices that had no business malfunctioning began behaving as if they had opinions.

This was not one person having a bad week with technology. This was a pattern. Across industries. Across time zones. Across people who absolutely knew better than to believe any of this — and yet found themselves Googling “Mercury retrograde end date” at 11pm on a Tuesday.

I consulted my tech experts. The stories were nearly identical. Systems professionals questioning their systems. Writers who could not write. Planners whose plans kept dissolving. The common thread was not incompetence — it was interference.

As for me personally — Mercury retrograde grounded my technology and my left foot at the same time, which felt unnecessarily thorough. I am, at this point, a captive audience to whatever this cycle has been trying to say. Chair. Feet propped on the ottoman. Laptop misbehaving. Nowhere to be.

The universe, apparently, does not do subtle.

What a Skeptic Actually Learns From This

Here is what is actually worth paying attention to — and this is where the skeptic in me gets genuinely interested.

The traditional retrograde prescription is this: do not launch. Do not sign. Make no major decisions. Review, revisit, reassess. Finish what is already in motion rather than starting something new.

Remove the astrological framing and read that list again.

This is solid business advice for any period of high interference, unclear information, and unstable systems. When the signals are scrambled, when communication is breaking down, when the tools are not behaving — that is precisely when you slow down, review what you already have, and resist the urge to force forward motion.

The retrograde did not create the chaos. It revealed underlying instability.

What felt like obstruction, for many people, turned out to be information. The relationship that became impossible during this period was already strained. The project that kept stalling needed to be rethought. The conversation that would not happen required more preparation. The plan that kept falling apart was not the right plan.

Pisces does not deal in logic. It dissolves illusions. It shows you what is underneath — not what you planned to see, rather what was actually there.

That is not superstition. That is pattern recognition applied in real time.

March 20 — Transition Point, Not Finish Line

March 20 is not an ending — it is a transition point. The retrograde revealed underlying instability. What happens next depends entirely on whether you use what you now know. Miss the window and you have simply endured a few inconvenient weeks. Use it and the disruption becomes an asset.

That is where the shadow period comes in.

What March 20 brings is clarity — right alongside the Spring Equinox, the moment light and dark finally agree on something, and the annual reminder that balance is possible, even if temporary.

The confusion that felt like static starts to resolve into signal. The decisions that felt impossible start to feel obvious. The conversations that could not gain traction start to gain traction. What was hidden starts taking form.

If something is not right — you will know it now with a clarity that was not available three days ago, let alone three weeks. If something is solid — it will stabilize quickly and confirm itself.

About That Shadow Period

The shadow period. Ominous name for what is essentially Mercury’s version of a post-meeting debrief — nothing new is happening, everything is getting filed correctly.

Mercury is not casting a shadow. Nothing is shadowy. Things are getting clearer.

Astrologers, like many specialists, have a talent for naming the most valuable phase of a process in a way that sounds like a risk advisory.

We are going to call it what it actually is: the window where what the eclipse revealed gets optimized, clarified, and integrated. Shadow implies darkness. This is the opposite — this is where things finally make sense.

It runs until approximately April 9. Not chaos. Not confusion. Conversations that started during the retrograde finding their resolution. Energy that was tangled beginning to clarify. The full picture assembling itself from the fragments.

Think of it less as an aftermath and more as the second half of the process actually resolving.

What You Can’t Unsee – The Wrap

So here is the question worth sitting with as Mercury stations direct, as the eclipse corridor closes, as the Equinox marks the turn of the season:

What did this period show you that you cannot unsee?

Not the tech failures — those will resolve. Or you will upgrade systems, which may have been overdue. The thing underneath. The pattern that became impossible to ignore. The misalignment that the static made visible.

That is what this was for.

The most expensive decision available right now is to return to business as usual and pretend the last few weeks did not just hand you a roadmap.

Even a deeply participating skeptic can recognize a gift when it arrives.
